Dear Data People,

November can be a funny old month. It starts with the pounding sparkle of fireworks, glorious flame coloured leaves and, if we’re lucky, the last vestiges of warmth from the sun. Then suddenly all colour has gone and it’s grey, murky, misty and dank. It feels like a bit of an ‘in-between’ month; distracting us as we slide towards the festive season whilst reminding us that the year will soon come to an end - whether we are on top of our data projects or not!

So, perhaps as we close the month, we should see the next few weeks as the time for one last push; an opportunity to get our data house in order before most of us switch off for a well earned break.

Already started winding down? Hopefully November’s top picks will offer a little motivation!

Doing Silly Things With Data

Ah, at last! Someone who gets it.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Charlotte Ledoux.

Data Governance is indeed about keeping people from sometimes doing silly things with data. But if we’re being honest, it’s also about saving people from their own ‘creative’ solutions…

(like naming their 48th spreadsheet version FinalFinal_FOR_REAL_THIS_TIME).

Let's break down exactly how data governance helps.

Imagine a world where everyone thinks they’re a data scientist…

Curious?

Costing The Earth?

“Data management doesn't have to cost the earth”

It's true - data management doesn’t have to break the bank if organisations take a strategic approach to how they handle and, importantly, store their data.

One key way to keep costs down is by being selective with what data they actually store.

By taking the time to figure out which information is valuable and needed, companies can avoid overloading their storage systems with unnecessary or duplicate files. In fact, a lot of times the same data gets uploaded multiple times to different platforms when a simple link to the original file could do the job.

Another overlooked cost in data management is deletion.

Yes, even getting rid of data can cost you!

AI Ethics has sprung up in discourse like a rabid whackamole. But what does it mean? And how do we align ethics with responsible AI adoption? What do we say to the cool kids who want to play with the shiny toys? What do we say to those lawyers who have just filed suit against us for copyright infringement and/or defamation?

These sound like pretty important questions which we are all likely to encounter sooner or later so why not get ahead here.

Join Daragh for a whistlestop tour through the bullshit bingo of AI Ethics in "AI Ethics and the Multiverse of Madness".
